The Women's 2s has had many ups and few downs throughout the season. Here's a quick review of how it has gone.
The start of the season brought in a lot of change within the team with a new coach and heavy amendments of the squad. This did not face any of the lpayers when they went into what was going to be a strong season for the squad.
Starting off the season with an away game on the grass, the girls had to face the elements in what was going to be a rainy and muddy game. The final score ended in 2-2 against Lancaster and the girls were hungry for more.
Then came Northumbria 2s, one of the many north-east derbys in Tier 2 this season. In an evening game the girls saw a strong 2-0 win.
Then the strongest competition came. Teesside 1s, recently relegated, with the Beth Mead scholarship. This was the expected biggest competition and it definitely was. After a close game the score was 5-3 to Teesside.
The Conference Cup is for turn but Northumbria 4s was too scared to face the strong Durham squad and a walkover is awarded to the 2s. Then came Lancaster at home. Wanting to revenge the draw the girls were ready to take 3 points. And they came in and did exactly that. 1-0 win to Durham.
Next round of the cup is for turn and Northumbria 2s are for turn. After a strong win earlier in the season, the confidence for the game was massive. After a close game the girls win 3-2.
In the next to last game of the season Leeds Beckett is for turn and they can't even compete with our squad. 5-0 win and massive confidence towards the final game before Christmas which is Teesside again. This time at home. Unfortunately their squad is one step in front and the girls face a 6-0 loss.
After Christmas the girls come back with energy and a strong competitive sense. The results speak for themselves. 7-0 win against Leeds Beckett, 2-0 win against Durham 3s, 4-0 win against Edge Hill in the cup, 6-0 win against Durham 3s again and to finish the league season 3-0 win against Northumbria 2s. 5 games, 22 goals scored, 5 clean sheets and the girls are ready for semi finals in the Conference Cup.
"This season the 2s have seen a massive improvement. The commitment from each individual has been excellent, and thanks to our coaches our team’s individual player improvement is evident with players stronger and better than ever. The 2s finished 2nd in the league, being beaten by only one side, Teeside 1s who were demoted to our league at the end of last season. Furthermore the 2s managed to get all the way to the semi-final of the conference cup, where unfortunately 2 goals scored by LJMU knocked them out. Overall, the 2s have been extremely comfortable this season, losing only 3 matches, it is an excellent achievement by all of the girls. This of course could not have been achieved without the help of our coach Ella, GK coach Jim, and of course our S&C coach Ellie." - Corin Davies 2s Captain
Unfortunately the semi-final ends in a loss, but it has been a great season for the 2s squad. While doing all this they have also had a run in BUCS Tier 1 for futsal. Winning all matches but one awards them a tied lead with Newcastle 1s. This is a massive performance for the girls with a goal difference of +40 goals.
The team can say farewell to a couple of essential players most noteably Corin Davies who has been 2s captain for 3 years, Maisie Parnell who came back from injury and is our very own club captain, and Ella Beecham who faced a career ending injury but then has taken on coaching and has seen the best track-record DUWAFC has seen in a long time.
