A look ahead to a university-career-defining game.
A sullen first eleven left the field at Highfields Sports Ground, having lost 3 - 1 to the Uni of Nottingham. What followed was a reckoning that changed the landscape of our season...
A fortnight later, and back in Nottingham, Durham took a well-earned and hard-fought point away at Nottingham Trent to keep the dream of survival alive, teeing up a trilogy of home games after the Christmas break.
Momentum built through the Mid-Season break as the boys got the bit between their teeth and ran themselves through wall after wall. The survival equation... seven points from nine was required to keep survival entirely in our own hands. It would be no small feat.
The first instalment saw us play table toppers Stirling. With the score 3-1 at half time, the boys were hopeful for a mammoth result, but Stirling's pressure told with the score finishing 3-3 at full time. One point secured. Survival was still very much alive.
A week later and triumph in the charity match, with a 6-1 win and second half drubbing of second-placed, Newcastle, in the North East derby secured an invaluable three points. Four secured from the seven required.
With results going our way Trentside, a three-side shootout for survival was teed up on the final day. This is how things stand:
The Table:
Durham sit on 9 points from 9 games, scoring 17 and conceding 20.
Loughborough also have 9 from 9, scoring 16 and conceding 22.
Trent have 10 points from 9, having scored 17 and conceded 19.
Final Day Fixtures:
15:00 - Durham vs Loughborough
16:00 - Nottingham Trent vs Uni of Nottingham
The Possibilities:
Should Durham win the game vs Loughborough, they are definitely safe and Loughborough are relegated (regardless of the result at Notts Trent).
Should Trent take anything from the varsity match, they are safe. A draw at MC would see Durham relegated on a head-to-head with Loughborough.
Should Trent lose... a draw at Maiden Castle would mean a mini-league is formed between the three sides based on their results against each other. Long story short, Durham would be safe in this scenario.
A loss for Durham would see them finish outright bottom (regardless of the result at Notts Trent).
