'Mo Time Like The Present': DUAFC and DUNC Collaborate for Movember

'Movember' is an annual fundraising initiative taking place over the month of November, which raises funds and awareness for men's mental and physical health. They focus on the stigma that men shouldn't talk about their feelings and, in their primary goal of mental health and suicide prevention, they encourage all men to talk to one another.

The theme of Movember is that men grow moustaches, as "each Mo is a conversation starter for men's mental health."

However, in addition to this, people take their fundraising efforts in their own creative direction. Two years ago, the football club participated in a world-record attempt, successfully dribbling a football the length of a marathon, in a tag-team fashion, beating the previous fastest time (which, to be fair, was set by an individual).

Not only did it help to raise money for a good cause, but it was an opportunity for members of the club to come together and talk in a more social setting.

This year, DUAFC - in partnership with Durham University Netball Club (DUNC) - have plans that go beyond simply raising money, but embodying and practicing the message of Movember: Talking.

Our Charity Secretary, Caine McCartney, and writer for student publication 'The Tab', Ben Green, wrote an article for 'The Tab' highlighting the work that the two clubs are doing this month.

This is what they said:

"Across November, DUAFC and DUNC are hosting both welfare-inspired events and sporting events and want as many people involved as possible. But how can you get involved?

"DUAFC and DUNC are teaming up for a collaborative campaign with the goal of it being the most meaningful devotion to championing mental health by getting people talking across the university whilst raising money.

By working together and alongside other clubs, Movember aims to build a positive and open culture surrounding mental health, where individuals feel comfortable talking about experiences of mental and physical health; across November, DUAFC and DUNC are hosting both welfare-inspired events and sporting events and want as many people involved as possible. But how can you get involved?

On Friday 8th November both DUAFC and DUNC are hosting a 'Mo than words' evening in the club room down at Maiden Castle between 6:30-7:30 for an evening of dialogue around mental health. The evening provides club members of any sport the opportunity to find out more about Movember and to get people talking about mental health which is often stigmatised for men."

DUAFC and DUNC are keen for as many people from as many clubs as possible to attend, both men's and women's teams. We hope that this will provide an open, inclusive, and supportive environment, in which people feel comfortable to talk about what's on their mind.

"Arguably the biggest sporting event in November is the 'Battle of the North East', where both DUNC, DUAFC and DUHC (DU Hockey Club) play Newcastle University in their BUCS fixtures on Wednesday 27th November.

"Following on from this both DUAFC and DUNC will take part in 24 hour relay run on the 9th and 10th of November to raise funds before hosting a 5k coffee morning finishing down at Maiden Castle on the 24th of November. Anyone is welcome to join and gives people another opportunity to speak with like-minded individuals about the importance of mental and physical health."

'Chairty matches' are a tried a tested concept of fundraising amongst university clubs but, in the spirit of our Movember drive, there will be a cross-club collaboration for a charity day of matches.

"Arguably the biggest sporting event in November is the 'Battle of the North East', where both DUNC, DUAFC and DUHC (DU Hockey Club) play Newcastle University in their BUCS fixtures on Wednesday 27th November.

The ticketed event, which gives you access to all matches, will give you the opportunity to watch different Durham clubs battle it out against their North East counterparts, whilst raising vital money for charity.

Whether you grow a Mo, attend a Movember event, or just share the donations page with friends and family, you can help make positive change for men’s mental health and encourage people to get talking and end the stigma around men’s mental and physical health."
